Meyers Chuck, Alaska Statistic: Population, Charts, Map, Steets and More

The population of Meyers Chuck City was 107 people when the 1940 census was taken. At that time, the residents of the area were trollers, Scandinavian bachelors who lived in tiny cabins made of lumber and abandoned fisheries buildings. After the World War II, the population of Meyers Chuck decreased to 51 people. Today, the town is home to about a dozen permanent residents, mostly retired trollers who have lived in the area since the 1920s.

The town's harbor has long provided shelter for fishing boats, and a saltery operated on the shores. Local fishermen sold their catch to the cannery at Union Bay, but the building burned in 1947. In addition to producing salt-cured king salmon, the city also operated a herring reduction plant and a clam cannery. In addition to this, Meyers Chuck had its own protected harbor.
