The Slana-Mentasta Lake region is 250 miles northeast of Anchorage and surrounded by snow-covered foothills of the Alaska Range. On Nov. 3, an earthquake ruptured the Denali fault, sending debris tumbling to the ground. The region's population is largely foreign-born, and the average household income is significantly below state levels. Those who were born outside the United States, or who are Hispanic, are much lower than the state average. There are also far fewer foreign-born residents than the state average, and the number of rooms in a house is far lower than the state average.
