The demographic profile of Big Flats shows that it has a low percentage of residents who are aged between 20 and 34 years of age. This is in line with the national trend of an aging population, but it also highlights some problems in the city, such as a lack of facilities and housing for older residents.
Big Flats' population is largely white, with only a small percentage of Hispanic and African American residents. However, Big Flats residents are still far above the State and Chemung County averages for educational attainment. According to ESRI Business Information Solutions, the DI of Big Flats was 7.3 in 1990 and 8.4 in 2000. The DI for Chemung County as a whole was 19.8 in 2000.
A confidential three-page survey was sent to all adults living in Big Flats. Blank survey forms were also available at Town Hall and the Community Center. The survey asked respondents to fill out the survey and then mail it back to Town Hall or the Community Center. The completed responses were collected and summarized in the Appendix to the survey report. Overall, respondents in Big Flats found the Town to be an excellent place to live.
In recent years, the Big Flats County has conducted several comprehensive planning sessions. These plans include economic development, transportation, and land use planning. The plans also seek to protect the natural environment and improve the quality of life in Big Flats.
