The population of Crawfordsville was 35,045 as of the 2010 census. The median age was 22 years old, and the population was evenly split between males and females. Thirteen percent of the population was under the age of eighteen, and twenty-five percent were between the ages of 25 and 44. Twenty-three percent of the population was between 45 and 64 years old, and sixteen percent were 65 years old or older. The gender makeup of the city was fifty percent male and fifty-nine percent female.

Although the city is a small one, the historical importance of the area is well recognized. In 1823, three rangers noted a suitable location for a town, and it was then laid out by Major Ambrose Whitlock. The town was named after U.S. Treasury Secretary William H. Crawford, and in 1832 the town was home to Wabash College, which was the first all-male college in the United States.

The racial makeup of Crawfordsville is composed of 92.2% white residents, 4% Two or More Races (including American Indian), 1.1% Black, and 0.8% other races. One out of every eighteen residents speaks a language other than English, with Spanish being the most common. Seventeen percent of Crawfordsvlle residents are employed in the labor force, while 61.0% speak an Indo-European or Asian language.
