When Eureka Springs was founded, it was separated from the county seat of Berryville by the Kings River. The King's River was prone to flooding, so city leaders decided to separate Carroll County into two judicial districts. Citizens in Berryville opposed the idea of building a courthouse in Eureka Springs, but the Arkansas General Assembly agreed to the plan on March 12, 1883. The new courthouse wasn't completed until 1908, however.
The town grew exponentially in the last decades of the nineteenth century. The town is renowned for its healing waters and a spa, and lavish Victorian buildings were built in record numbers from 1880 to 1910. Aside from the many Victorian buildings, you'll find a number of churches and elaborate landscaping. If you're looking for a romantic getaway, Eureka Springs might be the perfect place.
