Residents of Gould are proud of their history, which goes back to the early 1900s, when it was known as Palmers Switch. In fact, in 1904, George H. Joslyn Sr. served as postmaster at the Joslyn Post Office. He was succeeded by his son and he led the petition for incorporation of the town. In 1909, a railroad was constructed to connect Gould with Star City. The Gould Southwestern Railroad opened its doors on January 6, 1909, and operated for fifty years.
