Population & Steets in Mar maduke City, AR is a vital part of the history of Greene County, Arkansas. This once bustling town was an important hub of cotton, railroad, and lumber industry. The town is located approximately twelve miles northeast of the county seat, Paragould. There is no other town in the county with such a diverse population, but Marmaduke is an excellent place to live, work, and play.
In the early 1900s, Cotton Gins provided employment and trade in Marmaduke. However, the Cotton industry was plagued by hardship in Greene County, and in particular, Marmaduke. Nightriders, masked gunmen on horseback, sabotaged wagons of cotton and intimidated plantation farmers. Marmaduke had its fair share of nightrider attacks, and the first attack was in 1908 in the Farmers Union Warehouse, a cotton marketing warehouse.
A number of natural disasters have struck Greene County in recent years. During the Civil War, a Confederate general named John Sappington Marmaduke established a camp near the town. He and his troops crossed the St. Francis River at Chalk Bluff, and occupied the area for weeks. The Confederate General's presence in Greene County was part of his efforts to capture William Quantrell's Raiders, who plied the border states with raging cattle and horses.
In the 1970s, the city began to gentrify. The area's black population began to disappear. The city's population continued to decline and it was time to seek out other forms of industry that had initially drawn the community. Now, a town house in Marmaduke City costs roughly $150,000.
