Pencil Bluff City is a small town in rural Arkansas. Prior to the 1950s, it was known as Sock City, until locals pushed for the name change. The town was called "Sock City" in 1940 and "Pencil Bluff" by 1948. The new town's name is derived from the slate bluff that overlooks the Ouachita River. The Post Office opened in 1949 and is named after the bluff that overlooks the town.
