The Agoura Hills neighborhood was founded in 1871 by Don Pedro (Pierre) Agoure. He came to the United States from France, at the age of seventeen. The young farmer was known as a swashbuckler, and he adopted the Spanish way of living and the name Pierre. By 1900, Agoura was used as a stage stop and was home to water wells.

Several years after the first residents of the city arrived, the area was named Independence Acres after a local spring. By the mid-1920s, it became a popular backdrop for films, and the name was changed to Agoura after the chamber of commerce petitioned for a post office. In 1928, the Postal Department chose Agoure as the city's official name, changing the "e" to an "a" to make it easier to pronounce.
