Founded in 1849, this community was home to a stage line in the early 1850s and a few Chinese mining companies. The area's flats and hills were covered with surface gold. It was here that the first Chinese tong war occurred in the state. In 1854, the town built a stone and brick post office, and in 1855, the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church was built. Restored in 1949, it was led by Father Henry Aleric.
