Copperopolis City is a two-hour drive east of San Francisco. It was founded in 1860 by John McCarty, who discovered copper in the area. The Civil War created a large demand for the metal, which led to the growth of the city. By 1867, it was home to more than 10,000 people and ninety businesses. However, the town's fortunes fluctuated with world wars and the decline in copper prices. In the 1970s, asbestos mining became a major industry.

The town square of Copperopolis looks like something out of a movie. Michele Schummer, a sixth-generation descendant of Thomas McCarty, a founding family member of the town, recently moved back to the town. She now lives near her ancestor's grave in Copperopolis Cemetery.
