Woodbridge Township is the oldest original township in New Jersey. It was founded in the early autumn of 1664 and granted its charter by King Charles I in 1669. According to Joseph Dally, the township was named after Reverend John Woodbridge of Newbury, Massachusetts. In 1714, James Parker was born in Woodbridge and founded the first permanent printing house in New Jersey. He was a business associate of Benjamin Franklin and became a notable local leader.
