The town's post office opened in 1912 and by the mid-twentieth century, it had a population of 23 people. In the early 1930s, Abel B. Pierce constructed a cotton gin, housing units for the workers, and the first roads in the town. By the time of WWII, Sargent had grown to eighty people. The post office closed in the mid-40s, but in 2000, the population of Sargent had risen to 300.

While the total number of renter-occupied housing units in Sargents City decreased by 2% from 2000 to 2011, the numbers of units and households per household are comparable to the neighboring cities of Elm Creek and Maxwell.
