In 1883, Vilas was first surveyed by the Western Town Lot Company. The town was slated to grow rapidly, but its founders did their best to discourage it. The town's name was given in honor of Col. William F. Vilas, a Civil War veteran and prominent Wisconsin attorney. Vilas was elected as U.S. senator from Wisconsin from 1891 to 1897.
