In 2014, there were 375,852 housing units and 347,332 households in the city. The median monthly owner cost was $3,398 with a mortgage and $1,426 without a mortgage. In 2018, the average monthly gross rent was $1,493 and the average household size was 2.71 persons. Approximately one in five households were family-oriented, and the average household size was 2.63 people. One in every ten residents was elderly, and two thirds of households were non-family-oriented.

After the Civil War, entrepreneurs built fortunes in the New York area. Many built large estates in Westchester. The Hudson River and Nepperhan Creek drew an industrial base.
