The town's name was given by English colonists who named it after a Mohegan sachem in the 17th century. The Mohegan, part of the Algonquian-speaking Pequot tribe, became independent during the 17th and eighteenth centuries. Uncas allied with the English during the Pequot War in 1637 and founded Fort Shantok to welcome the colonists to the Mohegan lands.
