Port Richey was founded in 1880 by Captain Aaron Richey. Originally called Hickory Hammock, the city was named New Port Richey in 1924. In addition to being a part of the city, Port Richey had post offices since 1884. Interestingly, the city's first postmaster was Gerben DeVries. In 1916, George Sims purchased the Port Richey Land Company and built his home in New Port Richey.
