Founded in 1868, Palmdale was initially known as Palmenthal. It was established by westbound travelers, mostly Germans and Swiss, who had mistaken the Palm Trees for Joshua trees. By June 17, 1888, the city was incorporated and its post office was located near the Southern Pacific railroad tracks. The railroad was one of the main routes between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
