The town was incorporated in 2000 after a vote by the homeowner association. The name Southwest Ranches was one of 122 names that were submitted for the contest. The homeowner's association voted to allow the city to incorporate in 2000, and a bill to do so was approved by the Legislature. The city had a population of 7,600 people as of the 2010 census, and there were 2,235 households and 1,861 families living in Southwest Ranches.
