Venice City is situated on the Adriatic Sea, and historically was a wealthy, thriving city. It traded extensively with the Byzantine Empire and the Middle East. By the late thirteenth century, Venice had 36,000 sailors operating 3,300 ships. This thriving city was a leader in Mediterranean commerce. The leading families competed to build the most lavish palaces, and supported some of the finest artists. The city was governed by a "Great Council," composed of the noble families of Venice, and appointed all public officials. A Senate of about two hundred to three hundred people voted on important issues.

In May 2007, the City of Venice received two Venice MainStreet Design Awards. The award-winning Michael Biehl Park, on the corner of U.S. 41 Business and Tampa Avenue, contains a mural, water feature, and granite stone engraved with the John Nolen plan.
