The physical development of the city was nearly complete by the 1930s. The Asbury Park Press reported that around 350 buildings were in the city. Of these, approximately two hundred were constructed before World War I, and 170 were already in place by 1905. The Allenhurst Inn served as a military training facility during World War II. In the 1950s, the hotel buildings were destroyed by fire. Ranch houses were built in their place. The city's historic district now includes several mid-twentieth century residences.
