In 1881, Grovetown was incorporated and chartered by the Georgia Legislature. The city is named after the Grove Baptist Church, which was established in 1808. The postmaster at that time was Charles Clifford, who also owned a corner store.

Many influential people from Augusta had summer homes in Grovetown. They escaped the blight and disease along the river. They would commute to the city by the old Picayune railroad. The area was also home to the Rosland Hotel, which was built in the 1880s. Its rotunda was used for church gatherings and dances. Later, it was converted into a boarding house. The church is located on the site of the former Rosland Hotel.
