While most of the country leans Republican, the Lincolnton City population was a Democrat's favorite in the 2008 presidential election. In addition to the mayor, the city has four council members and a city manager to handle day-to-day governance of the city. Council members are elected at-large for four-year terms and the mayor is elected for two-year terms.

The population of Lincolnton is approximately 7,600 people. This city is part of the Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia, NC-SC metropolitan area. Lincolnton City is located on the south fork of the Catawba River and is northwest of Charlotte. Native American tribes have long inhabited the area. European Americans first settled in the late eighteenth century.

The South Aspen Street Historic District contains a number of buildings that are architecturally significant at a local level. Two of these are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and both are good examples of various architectural styles popular in the city from the mid-nineteenth century to the early twentieth. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places are the Wallace H. Alexander House and the Barrett-Hoyle House, both of which were built in 1852.

The population of the city was fairly well-divided. Twenty-seven percent of the population was under the age of eighteen, while eight percent was aged between 18-24. Forty-one percent of households were married, while twenty-one percent were non-families. One-quarter of all households were composed of single people, while 13.8% of households contained an elderly person alone. The average household size was two-and-a-half people.
