You may be interested in knowing the population and steets of Milledgeville City. Milledgeville is located in Baldwin County, Georgia. It was once the fourth capital of Georgia. During the Civil War, it served as the state's capital. Today, it is a thriving city with many historic buildings. In 1870, it was incorporated into Baldwin County and named after former governor John Milledge.

The town's population grew as the Georgia state legislature moved the capital to Atlanta during Reconstruction. As Atlanta became a symbol of the New South, Milledgeville struggled to remain a viable city. During this time, however, local leaders helped the town by establishing Middle Georgia Military and Agricultural College on Statehouse Square. The college was later renamed Georgia Military College. Another important institution was the Central State Hospital. These developments allowed Milledgeville to evolve into a less provincial city than many of its neighbors.

The town had a very diverse population. Twenty-four percent of residents were under 18 years of age, while twenty-seven percent were between the ages of 25 and 44. Twenty-three percent were married couples, and one-fifth of households had a female householder without a husband. One fifth of the population was a single-person household, and ten percent were seniors living alone.

The population of Milledgeville increased to 44700 by the year 2000. Since the town has been a dependent on government institutions for so long, community leaders have tried to diversify the economy. Some of the prisons and Central State have closed recently. In addition, the population is growing as the city looks to diversify its economic base. Milledgeville has a total area of 20.6 square miles (55.8 km2), and is approximately 0.74 percent water.
