The county was created in 1856 and named for Spanish General Juan de Ugalde. Growth slowed during the Civil War, but continued to grow afterward after the railroad reached the area. Between 1881 and 2010, Uvalda's population increased by 8.8%. It was named after the Spanish word for live oak trees, encina. The city's principal streets and alleys were 90 feet wide.
