The population of Lake Fork City is over 5,000 people. It is located in the upper Henson Creek and Lake Fork valleys. In the mid-19th century, the region grew as silver and gold mines opened in the area. The area was quickly developed with little regard for water quality or scenic values. Trees were cut down on hillside for building materials or mine timber. As a result, the area grew in population and diversity.
The population of Lake Fork City is largely seasonal, and most residents earn their incomes outside the city. The area was described as primarily rural in 1870, but the city has several industries. The mid-19th century population was approximately 5,000, and the upper reaches were home to a large community. In the late nineteenth century, Lake City became the largest city in Hinsdale County, attracting a large number of summer vacationers. In 1875, the city was laid out on the confluence of Lake Fork and Henson creeks.
In addition to being a popular tourist destination, Lake Fork is home to an unincorporated town of fewer than 4,000 people. It is located on Idaho State Highway 55 about 5.5 miles south of McCall. While it does not have a city government, there are plenty of ranches, and the population is steadily growing. With a population of only 5,000, Lake Fork has a vibrant downtown.
