Evanston was heavily Republican in voter identification from the Civil War until the 1960s. During the 1968 presidential election, Nixon carried Evanston, but it started to shift Democratic in the 1960s and is almost exclusively Democratic.

The rapid growth of Evanston came about because of its accessibility to Chicago by rail. Founders of Northwestern University delayed completing their commitment to locate their university until the Chicago & Milwaukee Railway line made its stop in Evanston. When the line finally began to stop at Evanston in 1855, the city's population boomed. The city grew rapidly and became one of the first streetcar suburbs. This line started at Church Street in Evanston and extended all the way to Waukegan.

As of 2010, 88.2% of the population lives in Evanston Township High School, which is part of the University of Illinois at Chicago. In 2004, John Kerry won 82% of the vote here and George W. Bush won a mere 17%. Today, Evanston is known as "Da Town," after the baby boom generation nicknamed it. During that time, the city grew up as a suburban community with a small urban center.
