Single-family homes flooded the housing market in the 1990s, and car dealerships were common along Oden Avenue. By 1994, car dealerships accounted for nearly 40 percent of the city's sales tax revenue. The population grew to 24,534 people in 2000. The 2000 census revealed that the population was 12 percent Asian, 7 percent Latino, and 5 percent African American.
The Westmont area grew as a result of the labor of its people. In 1872, William Gregg founded the Excelsior Brick Company. This factory was situated on the highest point of the railroad and employed 120 people. The company produced 70,000 bricks per day. The company's name was later changed to Gregg's, which was a result of the inventor of a triple-pressure brick machine.
