Early in Russellville, the area was inhabited by the Osage, a group from Missouri. Between 1818 and 1828, this area was part of the Cherokee reservation. When the Cherokee were removed to the Indian Territory in 1828, land became available for white settlement. In 1834, the first white settler, P. C. Holledger, built a home. Soon after, a new physician, Dr. Thomas Russell, had arrived from Illinois. By 1836, several houses were situated in the downtown area.
