The city of Davis is located in the Sacramento Valley region of Northern California. According to the 2010 census, the city had a population of 65,622 people. The number decreased to nine thousand people in 2016. The city grew around a Southern Pacific Railroad depot that was constructed in 1868. The community was first named Davissville after a prominent farmer named Jerome C. Davis. In 1907, the post office shortened the town's name to Davis. In March of 1917, the city incorporated as a city.
