In 1775, there were 11 houses in the center of Scotch Plains, including the Stage House Inn. This small village grew slowly, and was mostly a farming town. In 1742, William Darby donated a portion of his land to build a meetinghouse and cemetery for the community. This building became the first meeting place in Scotch Plains. The meetinghouse hosted weekly gatherings to discuss issues and family bickering. In 1831, a temperance society was formed and the local post office was established.

Scotch Plains was first settled by Europeans in 1684. The township's name is said to be derived from an early settler, George Scott, who had a wagon that he repainted in 1710. The township had a stop on the stage coach line between New York City and Philadelphia. Today, the area offers numerous recreation options, including the Ponderosa Farm Park, a public park that features a play area and a sprinkler area for the kids.
