Before the town was established, it was nothing more than a cornfield. The land owners of the area viewed it as an ideal site for a town. They sold off the land as town lots. By 1901, coal mines dotted the Norfolk and Western Railroad's main line through the town. The railroad's arrival brought with it many new jobs, and the city has since continued to grow to overtake Bluefield.
