Altavista is a small incorporated city in Campbell County, Virginia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 3,450. It is part of the Lynchburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. Residents are divided into two age groups: young adults (under 18) and older adults (65 and over). The median age of the city's population was thirty years old. Males outnumbered females by a ratio of 99.8 to one, with the exception of the 18-year-olds.

Alta Vista is home to a large proportion of educated residents, which is higher than the State of California and U.S. average. More than twenty-five percent of its residents are college graduates, and nearly seventeen percent of the population has at least an associate's degree. The city has an excellent educational level, and this percentage will continue to rise with the addition of new, higher-income households.

The average temperature in Vista is twenty-eight degrees Fahrenheit (70 degC) in late spring and early summer. During these times, coastal breezes keep temperatures below thirty degrees. The "May Gray" and "June Gloom" are the local monikers. The western side of the city tends to be cooler than the eastern side. In comparison to the east, July and September are generally warmer than the rest of the year.

This city's population is highly concentrated in a few areas. The employment land is largely concentrated in the Montgomery and Otay Valley areas. In the eastern part of the City, Eastlake and Otay Ranch are undergoing light industrial development. Main Street and Broadway corridors are home to the city's small businesses. Apart from Alta Vista, San Diego has several master-planned communities, ranging from older residential areas to vibrant urban centers.
