The area northwest of downtown is known as the Dutch Hill district. Its name comes from German settlers who settled Altoona around the early 1800s. It is located primarily within Logan Township, though it is technically within the Altoona city limits. The only part of this area that is outside of Altoona's city limits is the three-block-by-four-block Greenwood Road zone, which is largely residential. It is home to Ward Trucking headquarters.
After the Civil War, Altoona's population grew significantly. The Pennsylvania Railroad chose the city as a hub on its Philadelphia-Pittsburgh train route and built a 15-acre triangular rail yard between Clara Street (15th Street) and Branch Street (9th Avenue). The area below 9th Avenue became the city's central business district, while the area above 10th Avenue became downtown Altoona. In 1849, Archibald Wright began development with the purchase of David Robeson's 224 acres.
