The population of Codell City, Texas, is diverse. While overwhelmingly White, the city is also home to large numbers of Native Americans, Germans, Irish, and Scottish residents. Its language is English, but other important languages include Spanish, Italian, and Norwegian. The median age of the city is 39 years. As a result, males outnumber females in the city. There are 86.4 males per 100 females, according to the 2010 Census.

Founded in 1892, Cordell is the county seat of Washita. Located on U.S. Highway 183 and State Highway 152, it was named after the late Wayne W. The town's population increased dramatically from about 950 in 1910 to 2,936 by the end of the twentieth century, but declined again in the following decade.

In 1909, the county's first courthouse was a wooden structure. Later, it burned down. Most records were saved. After the fire, a new courthouse was built. In addition to the original courthouse, Cordell is home to the Cordell Carnegie Community Library, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. The city is home to the annual Pumpkin Festival and has been designated a Great American Main Street Community.
