The Goffstown area began as part of Massachusetts. The area was previously known as Narragansett Number 4, Piscataquog Village, Shovestown, and others. In 1761, the town became incorporated and officially named after Colonel John Goffe, a judge of probate for Hillsborough County. Goffstown also includes the village of Grasmere, named for William Wordsworth, a famous poet.
