This community is home to several small villages. One of the earliest is Gates Mills, located on the southeastern part of the city. The other is Mayfield Centre, which lies at the intersection of S.O.M. Center and Wilson Mills Roads. In the 1870s, each settlement had a post office, mills, and at least one doctor and church. The community was home to many railroad workers.

Many residents of the Mayfield area were immigrants from Italy, Russia, and post-Soviet countries. This community entered the post-war period with no industry. However, in the 1960s, a Pittsburgh-based company, Diamond Alkali Co., bought property along Mayfield Rd., and obtained unanimous support from the city council to rezone the area. The company built a $2 million headquarters and a research center on the site.
