The City of Moreland is part of the Melbourne metropolitan area. The city encompasses the inner northern suburbs and is between four and ten kilometres from the city center. As of 2006, the population of Moreland was 142,325.

Moreland City was formed on 15 December 1994, from Brunswick City and Coburg City. Its boundaries were extended southwards to include Broadmeadows City and Hadfield. The city's boundaries also included the Merrie Creek area and Moone Ponds Creek. Moreland's population is a mixture of young professionals, older residents, and families. The city's median age and proportion of foreign-born residents are lower than the state average. The area has many college students, but the number of foreign-born residents is significantly lower than the state average.
