Innis is located in Ellis County, Texas. As of the 2000 United States Census, the population of Innis City was 5,335 people. Approximately 31.9% of residents were under the age of 18, while 14.5% were 25-44 years old. The median age was 31 years old. Males outnumbered females 95 to 1; those over the age of 18 were outnumbered by nine1.4 to one.

The railroads played a large role in the early economic development of Ennis, Texas. Originally, three railroads laid tracks to Ennis: the Houston and Texas Central Railroad from the north to the south, the Texas Midland Railroad from the northeast, and the Waxahachie Tap Railroad from the northwest. These railroads later merged into the Houston and Texas Central Railroad in the early 1900s. In 1934, the Texas and New Orleans Railroad merged with the Houston and Texas Central Railroad.
