The case study of the city of Enna, Sicily, sought to find a spatial scale that could effectively communicate crime information. The problem with crime rates in the area is that they are not directly related to local characteristics, such as demographics, income, and unemployment rates. The study's original urban fabric has been studied as the natural and social linkage between different aspects of the city. It has revealed several facets that can be useful for revitalization planning.
The onset of modern land use regulations in Sicily dates back to the 1880s, and the establishment of the city's zoning regulations regulated the placement of neighborhoods. At that time, Sicily was divided into 200 large residential districts and fifty industrial districts. This resulted in an unprecedented concentration of population in a single island city. Today, this island city is home to the largest concentration of immigrants in Italy, with over half of the island's population living in the north and only 5% in the south.
Although Sicily has many larger cities, these areas make up only a small percentage of the island's urban area. In fact, there are four metropolitan areas that have less than one million inhabitants. The system of towns in Sicily represents one of the best examples of entrepreneurial logic. Historically connected cultures often borrowed from each other, but they tended to give the least to their own people, striving to gain maximum profit with minimum risk.
