The following are statistics about the Population & Steets of Bernard City, Iowa. The population of Bernard has increased significantly since 1962. From 736 people in 1962 to 1,215 people in 2015, Bernard's population grew by 65.1%. The population density jumped from twenty-seven people per square kilometer in 1962 to 44 people per square kilometer in 2015. In 2009, Bernard had 666 dwellings, including 402 main residences owned by 82% of residents.

The first post office was established in 1866, but the city was not officially named East Bernard until 1974. During the early 20th century, East Bernard grew to be a large, agricultural community. In the early 1980s, there was a major kite manufacturer and a gas pipeline company. In addition, several research corporations had established offices in Bernard. Today, there are numerous businesses in the area.

According to the 2010 U.S. Census, Bernard City has a total of 631 households. Of these, 37.2 percent of households have children under the age of eighteen years. Twenty-four percent of households are married couples, but there are 12.7% of households that do not have a husband. Twenty-two percent of households consist of individuals. And nine percent of households are senior citizens. The average size of a household in Bernard City is 2.74, and the median family size is three.

This town was first settled by the survivors of the Great Falls skirmish in 1676. In 1734, Bernardston was incorporated as Falls Fight Township. A petition by Samuel Hunt of Billerica, whose father had been in the militia at Great Falls in 1676, secured the town's formation. The town was renamed to Bernardston in 1762 after Francis Bernard, the Royal Governor from 1760-1769.
