In 1805, Aaron Putnam arrived to the area and settled in a log cabin. His house was unusually large for a frontier settlement. He was near the Military Road, which connected Houlton to southern Maine. Eventually, the town became a booming town. The town was renamed in 1833. Houlton was the first city in Maine to be named after a military official.
