South Waterford, Maine Statistic: Population, Charts, Map, Steets and More

In addition to the city's historic buildings, a great deal of attention is given to its residential neighborhoods. Waterford's growth spurred zoning efforts in the early 1930s, which preceded the city's formal adoption of a Master Plan. The early zoning efforts established four zoning classifications, including residential, business, and industrial, and set standards for building area, yard size, and height. Minimum lot sizes ranged from 7,500 square feet to 15,000 square feet.

Rural Waterford consisted of pasture, with increasing numbers of cattle and pigs being kept by local farmers. However, the decline in agricultural employment in South Waterford City undermined the position of these workers, and the children of farming families fled to Britain or the United States. The number of emigrants reached 7,000 in the decade before 1911. However, the city's population remained relatively stable during these difficult times.

There are pockets of deprivation throughout Waterford, and the city's secondary schools, which are free and have waiting lists, are particularly underserved. Waterford's Polish community, meanwhile, is incredibly welcoming. Polish-born Kamila Bystrzonowska opened her own restaurant MoMo eight years ago, and found it easy to get to know people when working in a pub.
