The majority of the population is between the ages of 25 and 44, and 25.7% is between 45 and 64. Of those over 65, there are approximately 11 people who are over the age of 65. The city is a mid-sized one, located approximately 140 miles south of San Antonio. The best months to visit West Rockport are November, March, and April, while August is the least pleasant. The city is also near Corpus Christi, a thriving port town 160 miles north of Mexico. It is an important shipping gateway on the Intracoastal Waterway, has two naval air stations and a campus for Texas A&M. The city is also surrounded by long barrier islands, including South Padre Island, which offers excellent wildlife viewing opportunities.

In 1867, the Ohio Common School Act allocated three schools to East Rockport, which were renamed Middle, West, and East. Each school had one teacher. As the city grew, the school board named new schools for the area, honoring former Ohio Presidents in the process. By 1880, the town had three schools. In 1890, the population of West Rockport had reached 2,000 people.
