The area's land was surveyed by Dr. Thomas Walker between 1748 and 1750. It was part of a grand road, intended to connect Kingsport, Tennessee, and Virginia. In 1760, Daniel Boone named the area Wolf Hills. This hill is now the site of the Cavehouse Craft Shop. Sculptures of wolves were placed around the city for a time. In 1871, a local auction sold 27 of them for $1 each.
