Beltsville is a census-designated place in northern Prince George's County, Maryland. It was named for local landowner Richard Snowden I. Snowden built large plantations and manor houses in Beltsville while other settlers could only afford a few acres. The principal crop of Beltsville was tobacco, which was shipped to England. The soil was ideal for growing tobacco. The town was also home to the National Agricultural Library.
