The population of Glenelg City is approximately 19,557 as of the 2011 census. A majority of the population is of Northern European origin with about one-third of people being second-generation Australians. It is a predominantly Christian community with approximately 32.7% of people being Catholic, anglican, or Uniting. There are also many Aboriginal residents in the city. Glenelg is located in South Australia and is one of the most rapidly growing metropolitan areas in the state.

The first tram service in Glenelg began in August 1873 as part of the South Terrace railway line. It was taken over by the Municipal Tramways Trust in 1873.
