The Gwynn Oak Amusement Park was segregated for over a decade, but racial tensions rose in the city in the summer of 1963. Protesters were arrested, and police arrested more than four hundred of them, including members of the NAACP, CORE, and National Council of Churches. In addition to the protestors, Baltimore County police arrested about two dozen clergy, including Jewish rabbis.

The median household income was $49,517. A single person and a couple with children made up 42.9% of the population. Twenty-one percent of households had a female householder who was unmarried, and 31.1% had no spouse. One person living alone accounted for 8.1% of households. The average household size was 2.55 and a family of three was 3.06.
