In the early 17th century, Mayo City was the home of the pirate queen, Grace O'Malley. The English monarchy welcomed the English to Ireland, but the Irish still held on to their Catholic beliefs and customs. Plantations began during the reign of Queen Mary in the mid-16th century, and continued through Queen Elizabeth I's long reign until 1603. In the sixteenth century, the Spanish Armada was forced out of Ireland after storms tore up the west coast. It landed in County Mayo, and General Humbert's army eventually fought the garrison.
