Fairhaven, Massachusetts Statistic: Population, Charts, Map, Steets and More

The Census Bureau's 2010 Population and Steets report for Fairhaven City shows that the city's population was 181,045. Of that number, 88,150 people were males and 92,895 were females. This means that 77.9% of the city's population is under the age of 18 and only 11.7% is older than 65. The median age of residents is 33.4 years, and both males and females are over 35 years old.

The city's first mayor was Samuel Fitch. He was a prominent local businessman and philanthropist. He was a key member of the Standard Oil Trust and also developed the Virginian Railway. His wife, Abbie Gifford Rogers, donated funds to many community projects. Fairhaven City was chartered on February 29, 1848. Its manufacturing industries drew immigrants of Irish, Scottish, German, Swedish, and other ethnicities to the town.

The city has two public parks and several smaller parks. Cushman Park offers ballfields and tennis courts. Fairhaven High School has a track at the park. Fairhaven also has several marinas and commercial wharves. The city also has several small bathing beaches. Fort Phoenix State Reservation, located east of the New Bedford Harbor Hurricane Barrier, is located in the city's downtown.

Currently, there are a number of highways in the area. Interstate 195 runs east-west through the town, crossing the Acushnet River and broadening as it approaches the New Bedford-Fairhaven Harbor. Route 6 also runs through the town, crossing Pope's Island. Fairhaven's Main Street and Adams Street are north-south routes. Massachusetts Route 240 connects Interstate 195 at Exit 29 and is one mile long.
